Will new bands stand the test of time?

Will the new bands stand the test of time like the old stuff ?

There are loads of bands that have been round for years from the 70's they are still hugely popular now.

Will the newer bands be able to do this in a few decades do you think, or has radio added to much pressure, or is there just too much variety, so good songs get lost due the volume of the market?

Some of them will be listened to, yes. Mainly the ones that have a wide appeal. Specific genre bands are likely to be listened to only by a small group of people. I still listen to songs I listened to when I was young (so 90s music) and I'm sure in 10 years I still will. Genres fade in and out of popularity; at the moment Indie is the 'big thing'.

Yeah, i believe Radio dictates a lot in the music industry. For example in the UK we have radio 1 playing the same music all the time. It gets drilled into your skull it ends up being popular as that is all you hear

But it wont be listened too in a few months time, I think bands have a shorter life span today. They release an album it gets raves reviews then they release a poor one and are forgotten about forever

Re: Will new bands stand the test of time?

I find that if the band is still making music or is still going on tour, then the group will still be remembered. The only reason why we know about the older bands (like AC/DC, Scorpions, Cheap Trick, Rolling Stones, etc) is because they're still in the music business, therefore they're getting publicity. Unless if your The Beatles, good luck being remembered 10 years later if you quit the music business right now.

Re: Will new bands stand the test of time?

There are still creative bands out there but unfortunately creativity is masked my greed, commerce and clever marketing ploys. Therefore I don't think there are many bands out there who will stand the test of time like some of the greats- Led Zep, Rollling Stones etc. Although like I said talent does exist. I've been listening to this great band called SOUND OF GUNS. They're from liverpool and have been getting really good reviews from music mags. Check out their myspace!!

I don't see a lot of todays bands being remembered in the future, unless of course VH1 has a 2020 special on One Hit Wonders.

However I do see Silversun Pickups being famous.

Re: Will new bands stand the test of time?

lol that did not make sense so let me put it into context
Davies said that radio dictates what is listened to, therefore also what is remembered in the future, and thus what is still famous 10 years from now. Im saying that regardless of this i like searching for what i find to be kewl, no matter from when it is

Re: Will new bands stand the test of time?

The bands from years ago which receive airplay today are a highly selected sample. For each one that endures in the memory there must be many more which are forgotten. The current bands who will be remembered in the future are diluted by those who will not.
